Heinz, a board-certified Pathologist, retired from private practice at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, California. After retirement, Heinz and his wife, Alice, raised funds and recruited volunteers to found Pathologists Overseas, and served as the original President of the organization. He participated in projects in Kenya, Eritrea, Nepal, Madagascar, El Salvador, Peru and Ghana
