Can you tell us about your lab and the services you provide?
A: Kabwe Central Hospital Laboratory is the largest referral hospital laboratory in Central Province, Zambia. It serves an area covering 11 districts with an estimated population of 1,815,793 as of 2021 and provides second and third level healthcare services. The lab is staffed by a dedicated team of 28 professionals, including 6 Biomedical Scientists and 22 Biomedical Technologists. In 2024, the lab conducted over 187,897 tests across a wide range of disciplines including molecular biology, hematology, blood transfusion , microbiology, mycobacteriology, serology, parasitology, histopathology, and biochemistry.
Q: Is your lab accredited, or are you working towards accreditation?
A: A: The laboratory is accredited to ISO 15189 by the Southern African Development Community Accreditation Service (SADCAS). This accreditation underscores our commitment to maintaining high standards of quality and excellence in all operations.
Q: What are the main challenges your lab faces?
A: Staff shortages are a pressing concern as the workload continues to grow, emphasizing the urgent need for additional personnel. Limited financial resources restrict the lab's ability to introduce new tests and procure advanced equipment, which are crucial for expanding its capabilities. Many existing machines are outdated and inefficient, creating delays in service delivery. Frequent reagent stock outs disrupt the smooth functioning of the lab, while space constraints limit its capacity to meet the increasing demands and house new equipment effectively.
Q: Can you share any accomplishments that you are particularly proud of?
A: The lab has achieved several noteworthy accomplishments. It has improved the pre-analytical phase of testing by introducing sample transportation cooler boxes at all collection points, significantly reducing sample rejections. User orientations and advisory meetings have further enhanced process efficiency. Participation in the external quality assessment program for Clinical Chemistry with Pathologists Overseas has been instrumental in resolving testing issues. Additionally, achieving ISO 15189 accreditation stands as a testament to the lab’s dedication to quality improvement.
Q: Are there any exciting future plans for your lab?
A: The lab has several exciting initiatives planned for the future. It aims to maintain its ISO 15189 accreditation while ensuring compliance with international standards. Staff training programs will be enhanced to improve efficiency and accuracy. The lab also plans to implement an Electronic Laboratory Information System (LIS) to streamline operations and improve data management. Furthermore, it seeks to expand its accreditation scope to include more tests and broaden its testing capabilities to better serve the community.
